New Kansas Education Plan
According to State Representative Dean Newton:
"Senate Republicans today unveiled an education plan to fund public schools and satisfy the Supreme Court ruling. The plan would add $414 million to public schools over the next three years. The first year of the plan would add approximately $125 million to public schools without raising taxes. The money would come from existing state resources and $80 million in state cash reserves. Funding for schools would increase $147 million in the second year and $142 million in the third year. The plan identifies no specific funding sources for the second and third years but suggests that an increase in sales and income taxes would generate enough new money (the plan did not specifically propose new taxes but encouraged any financing proposals in this area)."
I haven't really taken a close look at the plan yet, but at least the issue of education (and hopefully education reform in general) is now on the table.
